Below are scans from my 1957 "Girl Annual", explaining the different symbolic meanings an offering of flowers may have (click for a larger view). My favourite is the wallflower which apparently assures a friend: "I will stick by you through thick and thin" and the white clover which asks the receiver to 'think of me". So next time you give a loved one a bouquet, think carefully...
